Legal highs lead to 'horrific' injuries | Legal highs
The number of deaths involving legal highs are at their highest level in five years in Wales, new figures show. There were eight deaths registered in in Wales where the cause of death was drug-related and a legal high, otherwise known as a new psychoactive substance, was mentioned on the death certificate.
The list of new psychoactive substances potentially included in the figures includes mephedrone, synthetic cannabinoids, such as Spice, Khat, and 2-DPMP, known as Ivory Wave.
Welsh drug charities fear the situation could get even worse, as new substances are regularly being introduced to the market. They claimed there was a lack of understanding about the strength of legal highs which can often prove more dangerous than their illegal counterparts.
Ifor Glyn, the chief executive of drug charity Sands Cymru, says a change in the law alone is not enough to stop the legal highs from circulating. New psychoactive substances — often called legal highs — contain one or more chemical substances which produce similar effects to illegal drugs like cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy.
They can carry significant health risks due to their untested nature, and some have been linked to poisoning, emergency hospital admissions and, in some cases deaths. Legal highs are defined as anything that has a "direct effect on mental processes", but the new law does not cover nicotine, alcohol or caffeine. Those caught with big enough quantities and suspected of supplying or selling to others will be arrested, and could face up to seven years in prison.
Police will now also be able to shut down stores dealing the substances, as well as those doing it online. Across England and Wales, there were deaths registered in , where the underlying cause was drug-related and a new psychoactive substance was mentioned on the death certificate. The figures from the Office for National Statistics are for deaths registered, rather than deaths occurring in each calendar year.
Due to the length of time it takes to complete a coroner's inquest, it can take months or even years for a drug-related death to be registered. Nigel Mentzel, 70, from Penylan, turned to mind-bending synthetic drugs after retiring as a council planner. His death was thought to be the first in the UK connected with acetylfentanyl, a legal substance with effects similar to heroin and morphine.
An inquest heard how the father-of-three, a former opium addict had bought the drug from China in order to wean him off heroin. Synthetic cannabinoids are chemicals that have been developed to act like the main psychoactive chemical in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol THC which acts on cannabis receptors in the brain. Synthetic cannabinoids act like THC, the active substance in natural cannabis, but are often more potent, so it's easier to use too much and experience unpleasant and harmful effects.
There isn't much evidence about mephedrone and it's long term effects as it's quite a new drug but because it is similar to speed and ecstasy the long term effects may well be similar. There have reports of people hospitalised due to the short-term effects. Mephedrone is often described as a mix between amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine. The effects of mephedrone last for about an hour, but this can vary. It also risks overstimulating your nervous system, which may cause hallucinations, feelings of agitation and even fits.
Other effects that people have reported include heart palpitations, insomnia, loss of short-term memory, vertigo a form of dizziness , grinding of teeth, sweating and uncomfortable changes in body temperature. There has been limited research of 2-DPMP, but the studies that have been carried out indicate that it is a very potent amphetamine-type stimulant. Video Loading Video Unavailable.
